2025 Graduate Travel Scholarship

These awards are specific to discipline areas and some have age limits.  Please ensure you only apply for an award for which you are eligible. 

All applicants must have completed a degree at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music. For the music awards, current honours or masters students who are intending to undertake postgraduate degrees at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music are strongly encouraged to apply. 

Please note these scholarships will not fund applications to attend competitions.

AE Floyd Memorial Scholarship (Not Applicable)

The AE Floyd Memorial Scholarship is provided to enable the recipient to undertake further studies in music overseas. Applicants must:

  • have graduated from a music degree at the University of Melbourne Faculty of Fine Arts and Music (BMusPerf or BMus, or post-graduate studies), or of another university or institution approved for the purpose by the University, within the previous five years at the date when applications for this scholarship close.
  • be Australian citizens under the age of thirty years at the date when applications for this scholarship close.

AEH Nickson Travelling Scholarship (Not Applicable)

The AEH Nickson Travelling Scholarship is awarded to enable the scholar to pursue musical studies overseas. Candidates for the scholarship must have qualified from a degree or diploma in music in the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music or from the degree of Bachelor of Arts with a major in music; or have qualified for such a degree or diploma in another Victorian university approved for this purpose by the Faculty. Candidates must have graduated within the previous five years to the date when applications for this scholarship closes. 

Barbara Bishop Hewitt Scholarship (Not Applicable)

The Barbara Bishop Hewitt Scholarship is provided annually to support classical music graduates from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music to undertake further study in Australia or overseas. Candidates for the scholarship must have graduated from a course in music from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music within the last 5 years from the date when applications for this scholarship close, and must be planning to undertake further study in Australia or overseas.

FW Homewood Scholarship (Not Applicable)

The FW Homewood scholarship is provided to enable graduates in classical piano from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music to engage in further pianoforte studies with a suitably qualified teacher. Candidates for the scholarship must be graduates in piano from the Conservatorium and must have completed the course for the degree not more than five years previous to the date when applications for this scholarship close.

Donovan-Johnston Memorial Scholarship (Not Applicable)

The Donovan-Johnston Memorial Scholarship is open to a person under 30 showing potential to become a recognised and respectable musician and/or singer, to travel to undertake a music study program. Candidates for the scholarship must be graduates in music of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music who under the age of thirty years at the date when applications for the scholarship close. Candidates must further show potential to become a recognised and respectable musician and/or singer.

Joyce McKenna Scholarship (Not Applicable)

The Joyce McKenna Scholarship is provided for the most talented student for each year to travel overseas to further his or her musical education. Candidates for the scholarship must be the most talented student for each such year, and is provided to enable overseas travel to further the recipient’s musical education. This scholarship is restricted to classical graduates from the Conservatorium from the previous year's cohort.

Welsford Smithers Memorial Travelling Scholarship (Not Applicable)

The Welsford Smithers Travelling Scholarship is for classical graduates from the Conservatorium who wish to continue their music study overseas. Candidates must have graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music within the previous 5 years to the date when applications for this scholarship close.

Sir William McKie Travelling Scholarship (Not Applicable)

Biennial, next to be open in 2025. To enable a student to study organ or piano at a Conservatorium of Music in London approved by the Director of the Conservatorium of Music.

Lizette Bentwitch Scholarship (Not Applicable)

The Lizette Bentwitch Scholarship is for classical graduates from the Conservatorium who wish to continue their study overseas. Candidates must have graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music within the previous 5 years to the date when applications for this scholarship close.

The scholarship is paid across two years duration and the recipient must be studying overseas for both years of the tenure.

Quadrennial to Fine Arts and Music graduates, next to be open in 2028. Scholarship alternates between Music graduates of the University and graduates who have been awarded a degree with honours by the faculty of Arts in the University.  

Katherine Kearns Scholarship (Not Applicable)

The Katherine Kearns Scholarship supports domestic Melbourne Conservatorium of Music instrumental students aged up to 30 in travelling overseas (preferably within Europe) to further their studies in pianoforte, violin, viola or violoncello. Candidates must be 30 or younger at the time of application closing date, and be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

Biennial, next to be open in 2026.

Willem Van Otterloo Scholarship (Not Applicable)

Triennial (2025, 2028 etc) For ‘students of orchestral instruments graduating from the VCA, to assist them in ‘undertaking specialised programmes of extra study with distinguished teachers in Europe (preferably in Holland) before becoming professional orchestra players’.
